Graduation and Thesis Supervision

Everything you need to know about graduation, thesis supervision and theses already written at the Department of English Studies

Writing a Bachelor's thesis

Bachelor's thesis
In the Bachelor's degree program at the Department of English Studies, an independently written thesis must be completed as part of a seminar (§ 51 para. 1 no. 7 and § 80 para. 1 UG). The intention to write the Bachelor's thesis in this seminar must be announced to the course instructor in the course of the seminar.
The Bachelor's thesis does not replace the seminar paper required to complete the seminar. The Bachelor's thesis is awarded ECTS credits according to the curriculum (in addition to the ECTS credits for the (pro-)seminar).
It can be written in literary studies, linguistics or cultural studies (with linguistic or literary foundations and methods).
The thesis should be 12,000 to 15,000 words long and written in English. Students receive 12 ECTS credits for this thesis.

Writing a Master's thesis

A Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits) focuses on a specialised topic that falls within the subject areas covered at the Department of English Studies. It is a piece of academic work in which students should demonstrate that they are able to work on academic topics independently and appropriately in terms of content and methodology.
The topic of the thesis should be determined in the 3rd semester of the Master's program. This topic must be chosen in such a way that the thesis can be completed within six months. A proposal for the thesis should be written in the 3rd semester and discussed with the thesis supervisor. The thesis itself should be started in the 3rd semester and completed in the 4th semester.
The thesis is assessed and graded by the supervisor. It should be approximately 20,000 to 25,000 words in length and must be written in English. In cases justified by the topic, the thesis can also be written in German in consultation with the supervisor.

Further information on Master's theses can be found at the Faculty of Humanities. Information on Master's theses as part of the teacher training program can be found using the link provided.

The Joint Degree Master's thesis
The Joint Degree Master's thesis is worth 26 ECTS credits. The Master's thesis serves as proof of the student's ability to carry out independent study and research. It should be written in English and comprise 25,000 to 35,000 words. The Master's thesis must include an abstract (1,000 words) written both in English and in the language of the university of admission in accordance with the applicable statutes at the partner universities.
Students must determine the topic of their Master's thesis in consultation with a supervisor at the end of the second semester. Students are entitled to propose the topic or select it from a number of suggestions made by the supervisor. The topic of the Master's thesis must be chosen in such a way that it is possible and reasonable for the student to complete it within six months. The Master's thesis is assessed by two assessors, one of whom should be the supervisor and the other a member of the teaching staff at a university at which the student has not studied.
The supervisor will prepare a written report in accordance with the grading system at their university. The second assessor will provide a short assessment (approximately half a page) stating whether the Master's thesis is positive. Any exception to this rule will be communicated to the second assessor by the coordinator of the student's university of admission.
